App Review Wifi Hotspot & USB Tether Pro

svtp wifi hotspot

Without getting into the ethical and legal matters that surround tether apps,WiFi Hotspot and USB Tether Pro is an excellent app that deserves some recognition. What makes this app better than the free versions of tethering apps that you can get? Let's take a look after the break.

It is no secret that there are free tethering apps out there, and for some people that solution works for them. However, there are issues with some of them that include:

Limited or no connection to secure websites
Some Ad-Hoc networks not working
Dropped data
Slow transfer rates

These apps are out there and you are encouraged to try them, but they for the most part require you to root your phone.

First of all, WiFi Hotspot and USB Tether Pro isn't isn't cheap at $15, but don't let that discourage you from trying out the lite version. The lite version is a fulling functioning version of the Pro version that is limited to 48 hours. The old saying, “You get what you pay for” is in full effect here. Doug at SVTP was always prompt and answered my questions via email, and that makes a huge difference when weighing in the cost of the app. He has proven that he is fully supporting his app, and cares about his customers.

This app doesn't require root, and it works. Not to mention that it is fast, and all the devices in my house pick up data from my Galaxy Nexus just like a it was a proper wifi router. The following devices work great using this app as a hotspot: Windows 7 laptop, iMac, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS. This is of course not an complete list of what works, just a list of what I tether to almost daily with this app.

Personally, I can vouch for the app working on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and Samsung Droid Charge. The app was recently updated to work with the following devices:

Moto Bionic & Droid 2
Sprint Samsung Galaxy S II

The app now works with these devices:
  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus (no USB), Stratosphere, Exhibit, Exhibit 2, Galaxy S 2, Galaxy Gio, Intercept, Attain, Fascinate
    * Motorola Razr, Bionic, Droid 3
    * HTC Droid Incredible 2, Wildfire S, EVO 3D (?)
    * Pantech Crossover, Pantech Outbreak
    * Dell Streak
    * ZTE X500 (Cricket)
    * Sony Xperia arc
    * LG Ally, Optimus C, Optimus V
    * Huawei Ascend 2
    * T-mobile G2, Comet (Huawei Ideos U8150)
    * Kindle Fire
This is a great app from a dev that really seems to care about his customers. If you need tethering from time to time, this is much cheaper than paying for tethering through your carrier.
